Alpacem builds Alpe-Adria headquarters in Wietersdorf
Klagenfurt, March 11, 2022 … Today’s groundbreaking ceremony, at which Carinthian state politicians were also represented, marked the start of construction for Alpacem’s new company headquarters. With an investment of six million euros, the operative heart of the Wietersdorfer cement and concrete business will be created on the site of the Wietersdorf cement plant by March 2023 with a floor space of 1,500 square meters, 50 modern office workplaces and changing rooms for the site staff. All activities of Alpacem with 21 locations in Austria, Slovenia and Italy are coordinated from Wietersdorf and the company permanently works on the expansion of the market leadership in the Alpe-Adria region. “With the new headquarters, we are offering our employees an attractive working environment that is at the pulse of their needs. It will give us the space to successfully further develop Alpacem as a future-oriented and competitive unit,” explain the two Alpacem managing directors, Lutz Weber and Bernhard Auer. The construction concept specifically supports the personal exchange between the local employees from the management level to the factory workers and the international units in meeting zones and social areas. At the same time, the headquarters in Wietersdorf has a strong symbolic value: as Alpacem’s parent plant, the site not only marks its historical origins, but is also one of the most modern cement plants in the world today and an international showcase for sustainable cement production.
State politics welcomes Alpacem’s long-term attitude
At today’s groundbreaking ceremony, member of the provincial government Sebastian Schuschnig (economic affairs) pointed out the positive further development of Alpacem in recent years: “I am pleased that the internationally successful Alpacem group is further deepening its roots in Carinthia with the construction of the new headquarters. In particular, because here at the Wietersdorf site it is already being shown that investments can not only stimulate growth, but also gradually reduce the ecological footprint at the same time.” Martin Gruber, who himself comes from the region and is member of the provincial government, also was impressed by the project which is safeguarding the regional jobs: “With a total of 650 employees, the Alpacem group plays an important role as an employer today. I am pleased that the new company headquarters will safeguard a large number of jobs in the region. This is an essential factor for an active rural area.” Gabriele Dörflinger, member of the province parliament and mayor of Klein St. Paul, and district governor Claudia Egger-Grillitsch also took part in the ground-breaking ceremony.
Participation in major construction projects in the Alpe-Adria region
Today, Alpacem makes a significant contribution to the construction of a modern infrastructure beyond the borders of Austria. For example, the company supplies the quantities of cement and binders required for the construction of the Karawanken Tunnel, which will be an important connection between Austria and its southern neighbors. In Italy, Alpacem delivered the necessary quantities of concrete for the redesign of the beach promenade in Lignano and for the hospitals in Pordenone, Trieste and Udine. In Slovenia, Alpacem is supplying one of the most important infrastructure projects, the construction of the second railway line Divača-Koper at the fifth pan-European railway corridor. Most recently, the expansion of the Koralmbahn, the construction of the S36 near Unzmarkt and the traffic junction Trautenfels were also supplied in Austria. Every year, more than two million tons of cement and binders or more than 350,000 cubic meters of ready-mixed concrete are used in projects that last for several generations.
